About Us

PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Taylor Canyon Parents,

I hope you and your children have had a great start to this school year. I want to share a few pieces of information with you. First of all we want to celebrate some school reading success. At the end of last school year, 75% of our students were both reading at the expected benchmark level, and 75% of our students had typical or better reading growth. We still have some work to do. However, we are excited about the large majority of our students reading successfully! We are also seeing higher beginning of the year reading scores this year than we saw last year. This is due to the great support of our parents and the great work of our teachers.

I also want to share with you the work we are doing to help students to develop Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. Every class in the school has weekly lessons to help students regulate their emotions, to help them develop grit and to help them develop self-efficacy. The SEL skills students are learning are being used to help students to regulate their emotions, to help students to make good choices and to help us address behavior challenges. Some of the SEL skills that we use include helping students to feel empathy, helping students to learn how to solve problems, helping students to learn how to calm down and helping them find fair ways to play. When dealing with behavior at the school, we are able to teach students these SEL skills to address concerns. We are also working on providing other meaningful consequences to misbehavior through restorative practices like writing apologies and having helpful conversations before removing student privileges or suspending students. Even with our work on SEL, we do recognize that student behavior is sometimes still an issue. Therefore, please report any concern related to student behavior to Mr. Mendenhall (mendenhalld@ogdensd.org).

Finally, I want to invite you to join Taylor Canyon’s Facebook page. We are posting regular celebrations and exciting school work and school projects. To check out the Facebook page simply click this link: https://www.facebook.com/TaylorCanyonElementary

Thank you for your ongoing interest and support of our school community!

Sincerely,
Donald Mendenhall

TAYLOR CANYON HISTORY

Polk Elementary building exterior

Taylor Canyon Elementary was reopened on August 25th, 2010. After being closed for four years, the school got a new identity and name. The school includes the Accelerated Learning Academy with grades 1 - 6. Students from the neighborhood joined with these ALA students to make this school Taylor Canyon. The school was refurbished by removing the old tile, laying new carpet, painting classrooms, and getting new technology in each classroom. Teachers have the ability to use this new technology that includes: InterWrite boards, document cameras, projectors, and speaker systems. The students will also be able to use student responders and mobi pads to complete the technology available.

The faculty and staff come from a variety of schools throughout the district as well as recent graduates in the education program at WSU. There is a wide talent level within this group and we expect to use those talents to make Taylor Canyon a cut above.
